However, amongst web professionals, "web development" often refers to the main non-design aspects of building websites: writing markup and coding. Web development can range from developing the simplest static single page, to the most complex web-based internet applications, or social media network services.  In large organizations, web development teams can consist of hundreds of web developers.  Web development is a complex collaborative effort of a highly skilled team.

Electronic commerce, commonly known as e-commerce, or  eCommerce consists of  buying and selling of products or services over the internet. More than just buying and selling products online, it also includes the entire online process: developing, marketing, selling, delivering, servicing and paying for products and services. Ecommerce is conducted this way, spurring and drawing on innovations in electronic funds transfer, supply chain management, Internet marketing, online transaction processing, electronic data interchange (EDI), inventory management systems, and automated data collection systems.  eCommerce is also conducted electronically for virtual items such as access to premium content on a website, but most electronic commerce involves the transportation of physical items in some way. Retailers are sometimes known as e-tailers and online retail is sometimes known as e-tail. Virtually all large retailers offer goods and services via electronic commerce.  eCommerce conducted between businesses is referred to as business-to-business or B2B. B2B, and thatconducted between businesses and consumers, is referred to as business-to-consumer or B2C. Electronic commerce is generally considered to be the sales aspect of e-business. It also consists of the exchange of data to facilitate the financing and payment aspects of the business transactions.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media networking is a recent addition to integrated marketing communications plans. Integrated marketing communications is the practice organizations follow in order to connect with their target markets.  The growth of social media has greatly impacted the way organizations communicate. Since the emergence of Web 2.0, the internet provides tools that allow people to build social and business connections, share information and collaborate on projects online.  Social media marketing programs center on efforts to create content that will attract notice and encourages readers to share it with their social networks. The corporate message spreads from user to user and therefore resonates because it is coming from a trusted third party sources, as opposed to coming from the company itself.  Social media is a platform that’s easily accessible to everyone with internet access. Increased communication for organizations creates brand awareness and often, improved customer service. Also, social media serves as a relatively inexpensive platform to implement marketing campaigns. With emergence of channels like Twitter, and Facebook, the barrier to entry in social media is greatly reduced.

SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION (SEO)

Search engine optimization (SEO) refers to the techniques of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. The  more frequently a site appears in the search results, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine's users. SEO targets different types of search:  image search, local search, video search, academic search, news search and industry-specific vertical search engines. High Rankings equals web presence.
As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO looks at how search engines perform, what people are searching for, actual search terms entered and which search engines are preferred by the target audience. Optimizing a website involves editing its content, HTML and associated coding to both increase  relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to indexing activities of search engines. Promoting a site to increase the number of inbound links, is another SEO tactic.

SEARCH ENGINE MARKETING (SEM)

Search engine marketing, (SEM), is a form of Internet marketing that promotes websites by increasing their visibility in search engine result pages (SERPs) through the utilization of paid placement, contextual advertising, and paid inclusion.   SEM is utilizing multiple techniques of marketing a website so as to make it more relevant in regard to search engine searches and their subsequent rankings. It should be made clear that SEM is NOT SEO and vice versa. SEM consists of Ad words which comprises of pay per click (particularly advantageous for local providers as it enables consumers to get in touch directly with a company with one click), article submissions, advertising and making sure SEO has been done. Also, key word analysis needs to be completed for both SEO and SEM.  SEM is an ever present and tedious task. It requires constant updating and continuous monitoring.

Blogs are generally interactive, allowing visitors to leave comments and even message each other via widgets on the blogs. It’s this interactivity that distinguishes them from static websites. Most blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject, while others function as personal online diaries.  Typical blogs combine text, images, and links to other blogs, Web pages, and other   related media.  The ability of readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of most blogs. CONTENT DEVELOPMENT

When the internet began, web developers either generated content themselves, or took existing documents and coded them into hypertext markup language (HTML).  In time, web site development came to encompass multiple technologies and it became difficult for web site developers to maintain so many different skills.  Content developers are specialized web site developers who have content generation skills including but not limited to multimedia development, graphic design, professional writing, and formal documentation. They integrate content into web sites without using technology skills such as script language or database programming.  Content developers may also be search engine optimization specialists, or Internet marketing professionals. This is because content reigns supreme on the internet.  High quality, unique content is what search engines look for and content development specialists therefore have a very important role to play in the search engine optimization process.
